D.A.R.E. Program

The Scott County Sheriff's Department unveiled their new Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) vehicle.  The vehicle is a 1998 Mustang with a 5.0 liter V-8 that was seized by the Sheriff's Department from a local individual for transporting methamphetamine under Sheriff Lay's administration.  The unit functions both as a D.A.R.E. car and a patrol car.

Sheriff Lay's vision was to have the car painted black with striping of Royal Blue and Gold, his administrations current colors.  The red D.A.R.E. graphics were also added.  Sheriff Lay also added: "Most all Sheriff and police departments that have a D.A.R.E. program have some sort of out of the ordinary D.A.R.E. vehicle.  Some departments have Hummers, Corvettes, etc.  Now for the first time our department has a '98 Mustang.  The whole purpose of this car is for the kids in this county.  The car allows them something to look at and they get to play with the lights and siren.  It has a sport style look to it, so the kids draw their attention to it quickly.  The other reason for the car is to represent our D.A.R.E. program in Scott County.  This car will be used to educate kids not to sell, use, or be any part of drugs.  The car will also teach the kids a valuable lesson of when you sell drugs, your property such as cars and homes can be taken away by seizure ...Education is the best tool ever made to fight drugs."

The D.A.R.E. vehicle was awarded 1st Place at the Tennessee D.A.R.E. Offensive Association Conference - Tri State on July 2008.
